Every hour 3 people in Scotland will have a stroke or heart attack. Over the last generation survival rates for stroke, chest and heart conditions have dramatically improved which means that today 1 in 11 people are living with one of these life-changing conditions.
Life-changing conditions can affect every aspect of a person’s life from getting dressed in the morning to socialising with friends, playing sport or getting back to work. Without support, survivors can be left feeling anxious and frustrated about what lies ahead – this can lead to social isolation, anxiety and depression. Those of working age frequently face financial insecurity as stroke survivors are 2 - 3 times as likely to be unemployed 8 years after their stroke. As a charity we don’t just want people to survive - we want to give people the resources, skills and support they need to take their lives back and really start living again.
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) improves the quality of life for people of all ages affected by life-changing conditions. Our rehabilitation programmes include: one to one nursing and therapist support; small group work; community lead groups (offering a range of activities from social meet ups to exercise classes); our AdviceLine which is run by specialist nurses; our Hardship Fund which supports those impacted financially by their condition.
There are two ways you can join our team, either as a Charity Assured Place, where you pay the charity a registration donation and pledge to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship or as an Own Entry Runner. All runners are valuable to us, so if you chose to run as a Charity Assured Place or as an Own Entry runner, you can be sure that you are helping in the fight against chest, heart and stroke illness.
Together we can beat chest, heart and stroke illness in Scotland.
